WALDOCH TAKES SCHALKE CAPTAINCY

SCHALKE have announced a change of captain for the impending Bundesliga season, with Tomasz Waldoch taking over from veteran skipper Olaf Thon.

The 34-year-old former German international wants to concentrate on keeping his place in the side this season, and has passed the armband on to his 29-year-old defensive colleague.

Former Bochum stopper Waldoch, the Polish international team captain, was deputy to Thon last season, but coach Huub Stevens believes that he has eleven captains on the field each time his side plays.

"For me, all players are captains, but only one wears a band," he said. "It is important that every player is able and takes responsibility."

Thon admitted: "After the past two years, it did not work successfully. Changes needed to be made, and this will give the side new momentum."
