MYSTERY ENGLISH CLUB IN FOR TRISTAN

REAL MALLORCA striker Diego Tristan is being chased by an anonymous 'great' English club, according to his agent Paco Duran.

Tristan was lined up as a target for Real Madrid by former supremo Lorenzo Sanz, but the triumph of Florentino Perez in the presidential election scuppered any deal.

Duran admitted that the Real deal was dead in the water: "I have not received any call from the new president, nor anybody else from Real Madrid."

However, the agent has stated that a move to the Premiership is a very real option, saying that a 'great one' of English football have approached the player, but only adding that that club was not Arsenal.

The mystery bidder is far from clear, with most of the high profile Premiership teams unlikely to be lining up a move for a new attacker.

Chelsea have already bought Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, although if they decide to sell Tore Andre Flo to suitors Deportivo La Coruna, manager Gianluca Vialli may be looking to strengthen his squad.

Manchester United have re-signed Teddy Sheringham on the understanding that they would not be looking for new forwards after the move for Ruud van Nistelrooy fell through, due to the Dutchman`s knee injury.

Newcastle United would probably have to complete the sale of Duncan Ferguson to be able to afford the fee that Mallorca would demand for their player - especially since the £7 million signing of Carl Cort and arrival of fellow hit-man Daniel Cordone.

Liverpool are clearly have no need to buy another attacker - with Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey the main contenders for two striking slots at Anfield.

Tottenham have already broken their transfer record to land Sergei Rebrov, and, despite George Graham's assertion that another striker is being sought, have seen their existing forwards hit prolific form in the pre-season. There is a possibility Graham may be keen, after previously targeting Hasselbaink and Emile Mpenza (even after signing Rebrov), but he would have to off-load Les Ferdinand to justify another striker purchase.

Finally Scottish giants Rangers were known to be interested in the Spaniard, although they dropped out because of the inflated fee but, following the failure to land Mpenza and Darko Kovacevic, could be prepared to meet the asking price.

Duran, however, insists that the club involved are English not British - leaving a big question mark over exactly who wants the 24-year-old.
