HOULLIER ADMITS MOVE FOR SOL & RIO

LIVERPOOL manager Gerard Houllier has admitted that he tried to sign Rio Ferdinand from West Ham and Sol Campbell from Tottenham, when he took sole charge of the squad.

Houllier joined The Reds as co-manager with now former boss, Roy Evans, and can confirm he made a move for two of the Premiership's top defenders.

Houllier said: "I made enquiries for Rio Ferdinand and Sol Campbell but the prices quoted were crazy. For the same money I would have paid for either of them, I signed Sander Westerveld, Sami Hyypia, and Stephane Henchoz.

"I make no apology for shopping abroad when I know I can get better value for money but it is worth pointing out two of my most expensive signings are Emile Heskey and Nick Barmby.

"In the modern game, a big squad is essential and it is my duty to provide one at Liverpool. We have not won the championship since 1990 and that is unacceptable for a club of this stature.

"In my opinion, we still have some way to go but the wheels are now in motion and we are recruiting players who want to be here.

"Don't forget, some of my signings turned their backs on Champions League football to join the Liverpool cause.

"I want people like that and their nationality does not even come into the equation.

"It is important for the Liverpool supporters to understand that. I fell in love with English football and this club in particular when I stood on the Kop 30 years ago.

"Now I am the manager, my commitment is even greater.

"If we can enjoy some success this season, I know they won't be bothered about the nationality of the players. It does not matter who wears the red shirt as long as we are winning matches."
