LEEDS SET FOR £4M MATTEO MOVE?

IT is reported that Leeds United are looking to make a shock £4 million swoop for Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo.

The left back has been expected to leave Anfield this summer, and was linked with a move to Blackburn last month, although a bid by former Reds manager Graeme Souness never materialised.

However, with Christian Ziege expected to join the club, Matteo's chances of gaining regular first team football are slim, and he is known to want to further his international career with Scotland, who he pledged his allegiance to earlier this summer.

Leeds manager David O'Leary is reported to have targeted the 26-year-old, who can also play in the centre of defence, as a signing after it finally emerged that the club were unlikely to succeed in a move for Rio Ferdinand.

Such a versatile player would help to strengthen Leeds' defence, and could also hasten the exit of Michael Duberry, who has failed to establish himself at Elland Road since signing from Chelsea last summer.
