Francis Jeffers says the support of Liverpool fans should be at the forefront of Raheem Sterling's mind as he plans his next career move.
Sterling has cast doubt on his future at Anfield by turning down a £100,000-a-week deal and saying he will not discuss a contract extension until the summer.
Jeffers also faced a career-defining choice in 2001 when he opted to leave boyhood club Everton to join Arsenal.
And, asked for his advice for Sterling, former England striker Jeffers told The Fantasy Football Club: “Do not underestimate the love the fans have for you. Liverpool are a big club. The grass is not always greener.
“It was a tough decision for me. If I had stayed at Everton, I would have got more football.
“I didn’t speak to Arsene Wenger before the day I actually signed. I was on the beach in Magaluf with the lads. I flew home to London to meet him at David Dein's house.
“I was in awe of all the lads. Dennis Bergkamp and Freddie Ljungberg were both there in pre-season and on the first day of training I thought, 'the standard is good here'.
“And then a couple of weeks later all the big hitters arrived!”
Unfortunately for Jeffers, his time at Arsenal was blighted by injuries and he made just 22 Premier League appearances over two seasons.
He then returned to Everton on loan for the 2003/04 campaign but fell out with manager David Moyes after starting only six matches.
“I feel I did not get a crack at it back at Everton under David Moyes,” he said. “I had to win the fans and everyone all over again. And in the end all the frustration just blew up.”
