CELTA LOOK TO MARCELINO

CELTA VIGO have reportedly approached Newcastle United about the possibility of signing Spanish defender Elana Marcelino.

The 28-year-old Gijon-born centre back has found it difficult to adjust to life on Tyneside, after a season decimated by injury last term, and was linked to Liga champions Deportivo la Coruna, but it now appears that Vigo have jumped to the head of the queue.

Marcelino played in The Magpies’ 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, hinting that he may be set for a run in the first team, but it is certain that manager Bobby Robson would consider Celta’s offer in a bid to trim the squad and the wage bill.

The defender was signed by Ruud Gullit from Majorca for £5 million at the start of last season, and Robson would have to take a substantial loss if he is to offload the player.

Celta coach Victor Fernandez is desperate to reinforce his central defence and has reportedly offered £2.9 million in a bid to bring Marcelino to Balaidos stadium.

Robson is certain to be looking for a replacement stopper, after a woeful defensive display against Manchester United highlighted the Geordies’ fallibility at the back.
