LEEDS QUALIFY FOR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

DAVID O'LEARY`S men produced yet another fantastic European display as they qualified for the Champions League, defeating TSV 1860 Munich 1-0 in the Olympic Stadium with a goal from Alan Smith.

Munich have never defeated English opposition in European football, and that hoodoo will continue as Leeds progress into the next phase.

Smith grabbed the crucial goal just seconds into the second half when Mark Viduka managed to poke the ball through to his strike partner, who stroked the ball home with his left foot from 15 yards out.

The goal was Smith's fourth goal of the season, and was just reward for O'Leary, who selected the youngster ahead of last season's top-scorer Michael Bridges who had to make do with a place on the bench.

Leeds though had chances throughout the game, and after just 12 minutes should have had a penalty when Michael Duberry was tripped after a surging run from the back, but the referee Claus Larson refused to give it amid mass protests from the Yorkshire men.

Then, after 20 minutes, Australian international Viduka had the opportunity to grab his first goal for the club, but Michael Hoffman produced a brilliant save to tip the ball round the post.

Munich also had their chances, and the nearest the home side came was a Thomas Hassler free kick on the stroke of half time.

Matthew Jones, playing his first game of the season, committed the foul on the edge of the box and Hassler curled the ball over the wall, but the ball agonisingly clipped the outside of the post when Martyn was beaten.

Leeds boss O'Leary was overjoyed with his side and claimed it was the best performance he has seen whilst in charge.

"I would go so far as to say that, given the circumstances in which we went into this tie, this was the best performance from my players during my time in charge," said O'Leary. "With a team we had out it was a fantastic display.

"We had a tough draw and it was made even tougher given all the players out through injury and suspension, I had to play players out of position and we gave the ball away too much, but that is what happens when you have an entire midfield out."
