The Madrid fans have warmed to the Liverpudlian as a result of his persistence in staying at the club and his determination to fight for a place despite being told to find another team.

Vicente del Bosque seemed impressed with the England international's input and, although Figo is seen by many as his replacement, more top quality performances like this may force the Madrid club's coach to rethink his plans.

Despite McManaman's performance, the game was deadlocked until the last ten minutes when Madrid sealed the win. Pedro Munitis scored the first goal after 83 minutes and Savio fired home the second from the penalty spot after a foul on Claude Makelele three minutes from time.
