SWINDON GAME CALLED OFF

SWINDON TOWN have been forced to call off their home game against Cambridge United on Saturday because of the ongoing petrol crisis.

The game at the County Ground is the second game to fall victim of the crisis following Bristol City's clash with Brentford at Ashton Gate being called off on Tuesday night.

The reason for both games being lost is that not enough matchday staff can make it to the ground so the safety of the fans cannot be guaranteed.

"A large number of our stewards travel from villages and towns some distance from Swindon," said Robins safety officer Clive Doyle. "They are supplied by an agency that sends staff from Southampton, Brighton and Portsmouth."

"The petrol crisis has led me to believe that we can not guarantee that there would be sufficient stewards to run the event in a safe manner, therefore the game has to be postponed," said Doyle.

Although Cambridge fans should not have any problems in travelling to the County ground, the Robins do not want to risk losing money due to a low attendance.

"This decision has come much later than we anticipated but the final decision is up to the Football League," said chief executive Peter Rowe. "I can only state the club's case and wait for their decision."

Meanwhile, Robins boss Colin Todd has denied reports that striker Charlie Griffin is about to leave the club.

The 21-year-old joined the club for £10,000 from Chippenham Town after scoring 30 goals to become the Screwfix League top scorer.

Brentford were reportedly interested in Griffin but Todd has insisted that he is not for sale and is staying with the Wiltshire side.
