ROBERTO CARLOS TURNS DOWN INTER RETURN

REAL MADRID left back Roberto Carlos has pledged his future to the club in the wake of Inter Milan's interest in taking him back to Italy, telling the Serie A outfit that he wants to end his career with the European Champions.

The Brazilian international left the San Siro for Spain five years ago, and Inter expressed their interest in taking him back, with reports suggesting that they were to launch a 10,000 million pesetas (£36.8 million) bid for him.

However, the revered left footer said: "I have a good offer from Inter, but I am staying. My intention is to finish my career in Madrid.

"I have offers and they leave me very happy, but the best offer is the one of Madrid, that gives me the chance to play, win titles and be happy.

"I know that I am happy here. I have been here for five years and it would not be right to say I want to leave, no matter how good the offer. I have five years left of my contract and I do not want doubts. My intention is to continue giving my maximum for the team and to be with my friends.

"People know that I played for a season at Inter and president Moratti treated me very well. My problems were with the coach, who insisted on putting me in the centre of the field. Moratti let me come to Real Madrid and I have always been thankful to him."

Carlos did, though, admit that being the target of such a high bid was flattering for him, although he revealed that he was not initially made aware of the interest.

"10,000 million is a lot of money. I know that I am valued, but I am happy here. Players are always the last to find out, because instead of going to my agent, the clubs go to Real Madrid."
