STAM SET TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE
The Dutchman, writing on his own official website, admitted that he visited a specialist and he found out that he had Achilles tendinitis, which needed to be operated on.
"The area around my tendon is inflamed at the moment," said Stam. "The surgeons will look into my Achilles and find out whether it's my tendon causing the problem or the area around it. If they find something that needs to be removed then they will do it straight away."
The 28-year-old also revealed that he has been troubled with the problem for a couple of years now but just recently it had got worse and he had no other choice but to have an operation.
Stam also played down rumours of a bust up with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson over the injury.
"It saddens me that papers make up these stories, because there's no truth in that whatsoever, none at all. I've spoken to the manager and we've both agreed that an operation is the right course of action."
The influential defender could now be out for two months with the injury, meaning he will probably miss the rest of United's first stage of the Champions League.
"I don't know how long I'll be out for," said Stam. "It could be two weeks, or it could be a month or even two months. I really don't know and will only discover after my operation."
