VERON TO BE PROSECUTED OVER PASSPORT

LAZIO star Juan Sebastien Veron will be prosecuted for alleged falsification of the documents that enabled the Argentinian to receive an EU passport.

Veron holds an Italian passport through an Italian ancestor, but has been under investigation for some time over the authenticity of his relationship to the émigré - named as Antonio Porcella y Giuseppe.

The matter has been confused by the revelation that Veron has a much stronger claim through another ancestor - Luigi Pietro Ratti - but this was reportedly discarded because it would take as long as year to obtain the correct documentation.

Any trial would have to first ascertain if the documentation was false before they decide where the blame lies - but the finger has also been pointed at Veron's agent Gustavo Mascardi, translator Maria Elena Tebaldi and legal representative Ilario Camaiani.

The case is likely to be held up in the Italian court system for as long as a year, and is almost certain not to involve a custodial sentence, but in the meantime the Italian FA has no right to impose any sanctions on the club or player.

The preliminary hearing will give the first hint as to how the court will handle the case, although it remains likely that it will follow Roman prosecutor Silverio Pirlo's advice that the people involved should be held accountable.

Lazio have long since claimed to have no knowledge of the irregularity, and it appears that the Roman club will not become embroiled in any action themselves.
