ALONSO GAINS EU NATIONALITY

VALENCIA have received a major boost, with the news that Uruguayan striker Diego Alonso has been granted a European citizenship.

The former Gimnasia la Plata hit-man signed a five-year contract when joining the Spanish side during the summer, but his non-European nationality was of a growing concern to Mestalla coach Hector Cuper.

However, the player has obtained dual nationality through his grandmother being of Italian origin.

This is a major bonus to Cuper, as it will free a place for Brazilian star Fabio Aurelio, after snapping up the defender from Sao Paolo.
