DI CANIO LINKED WITH CELTIC RETURN
And another foreign star is keen to check in to Celtic Park, with Bordeaux centre back Herve Alicarte revealing he is desperate to join once the two sides get their Uefa Cup tie out of the way.
However, it is the news that the di Canio is interested in restoring his Celtic connection that will intrigue most Hoops fans.
The Sunday Herald claims that di Canio's agent, Willie Mackay, met Celtic officials in Bordeaux on Thursday to inform them that the Italian would be available.
Chelsea and Lazio have also been linked with the charismatic but unpredictable talent.
Di Canio left Celtic in 1997 under a cloud after spending one glorious season at the club in which he became an icon, even if the Celts failed to win a trophy with him in the side.
The player's cash dispute with then-chairman Fergus McCann prompted a move to Sheffield Wednesday before he then went to Upton Park.
However, it is believed that Celtic's board would be unwilling to sanction his return to Parkhead, not just for cash reasons but because it could endanger dressing room harmony.
Meanwhile, Bordeaux central defender Alicarte has told the Sunday Mail that he is ready to quit France for a new life at Parkhead.
The 26-year-old, who is valued at £3million, has admitted that he would love to play for the Glasgow giants.
"I would like to play for Celtic," said Alicarte. "They are a big club and I would be pleased if Martin O'Neill followed up his interest in me.
"I was impressed by them in the UEFA Cup match with us and they have talented players such as Larsson and Moravcik.
"It would be good to play alongside them and maybe something will happen soon.
"It is only a matter of time until I leave Bordeaux. The coach (Elie Baup) and I don't see eye to eye and it would be best if we parted company."
