LEEDS WANT £12M PHILLIPS - REPORT

LEEDS UNITED are set to make a £12 million bid for Sunderland's Kevin Phillips -according to reports in the English media.

Despite Leeds' signing of Mark Viduka for £6 million in the summer, and watching Alan Smith mature into an England squad member The Daily Mail reports that a massive bid for Phillips is being lined up.

David O'Leary's side has been rocked by injury this season, but have performed admirably in the Champions League and have kept in touch in the Premiership.

Phillips, who won the European Golden Boot last season, would be expected to demand a contract worth around £40,000 a week - which would put him among the top earners at Elland Road.

Leeds need a draw in Milan to ensure qualification to the second group stage of the Champions League, but could make Phillips part of their Euro squad for all but first two games if they progress, as long as the player is registered before January 31.
