STRUNZ TO STAY AT BAYERN

BAYERN MUNICH midfielder Thomas Strunz has turned down a move to Cologne and will stay at the club, while Lothar Matthaus appears willing to provide a solution to the search for a new defender.

Strunz had been expected to take a medical in Cologne on Sunday but cancelled the trip after failing to hear from the club's management for three days, and it is also believed that he was not offered the contract which he wanted.

He wanted a deal until the end of next season, but the club only offered him one until June, and the move has collapsed.

"They seem to have lost interest in the transfer," said Strunz. "Cologne is not important for me any more. Now I will concentrate on Bayern. Maybe there is a chance for me here now."

Meanwhile, Matthaus has recommended DC United defender Mike Petke to Bayern after news of their search to improve the backline emerged.

Petke has now been invited for a trial in Munich next week, and comes highly-rated by Matthaus.

"He is a very talented player who plays well against the man and is also very quick," said Matthaus. "I think he would make it at Bayern. In my opinion he will even become a better player than Markuc Babbel."
