WENGER WANTS BERGKAMP DECISION
The Dutch forward has yet to agree to sign a new, two year contract offered to his by the Highbury club, which will almost certainly see him have to also accept that he will be given fewer starts in future seasons.
Wenger has now urged the former Ajax and Internazionale ace to decide on his future this week.
"It's up to Dennis to decide," said Wenger. "I would like the situation resolved before Christmas. I want his to stay here, here knows that.
"But he also knows he will have to cope with the fact he will not play as much as he would like.
"We have four top-class strikers and only two positions for them so there will always be two of them who are not happy on occasions, but they have to accept the situation.
"It's exactly the same at Manchester United, Lazio and Roma, it's part of the modern game now."
However, 31-year-old Bergkamp appears to be waiting on a decision from Wenger over his manager's future before committing himself to a new deal.
"For me, the future is looking good," he told the Mail on Sunday. "But, if Wenger was to leave, that could change.
"I have already indicated to Arsenal that I really enjoy being at the club and want to finish my career here.
"You just never know whether you would get the same kind of manager again as Wenger and, at this stage of my career, I cannot be bothered to start all over again with a new coach, getting used to each other's methods, style and approach."
But Wenger is refusing to discuss an extension to his current contract, which still has 18 months to run, until the future of the transfer system has been clarified.
"It is not down to Arsenal," said Wenger, on whether he will stay. "It is up to me.
"I have told the board that I want to wait until we know what all the transfer rules will be about. It could be that Fifa and Uefa decide they want to destroy football and then I would have to consider my position."
Meanwhile, his striker partner Kanu has admitted that, one day, he would like to return to Italy, where he also starred in Serie A with Internazionale.
"I enjoyed my time with Inter," he said. "One day I can see myself returning to Italy to play."
