EVERTON MAY ESCAPE RAP OVER COIN INCIDENT

EVERTON are likely to avoid punishment after a supporter threw a missile at Coventry goalkeeper Chris Kirkland during the club's clash at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.

The Toffee's have branded the fan "an idiot" after he left the Sky Blues' shot-stopper with a cut on the back of his head and the incident will be included in referee Neale Barry's match report.

The incident comes just a month after Manchester United superstar David Beckham was pelted with coins during the Manchester derby at Maine Road which United won 1-0.

City are awaiting a letter of reprimand as the FA stated they were happy with their immediate action and Everton are likely to escape with a similar warning.

"Obviously these things are never exactly the same," an FA spokesman said. "But City moved very quickly with strong action, and Everton are doing the same so there is a precedent this season.

"We are still waiting for the referee's report on this latest incident, which we are not expecting to arrive until after the weekend."

Everton chief executive Mike Dunford apologised to Kirkland and pledged to issue a reminder in the club's matchday programme with Leeds on Saturday that such things will not be tolerated.

"Whoever was responsible for this action is clearly an idiot," slammed Dunford. "If anyone can identify that individual then we would like to hear from them.

"That sort of behaviour has no place at Goodison Park. We now believe the object thrown was a coin and, while the injury sustained by the Coventry goalkeeper may not have been serious, we cannot condone this kind of behaviour."
