FERNANDEZ REMAINS POSITIVE

DESPITE his side slumping to an embarrassing 2-1 League Cup defeat at the hands of Nancy, Paris Saint Germain coach Luis Fernandez has insisted that there are positive factors to take from the game.

Speaking after the 2-0 defeat, Fernandez said: "Of course I am disappointed, but also happy. Since I came, I noticed improvement in the game. And today, in the first-half, there were good things. We just have to congratulate Nancy."

Fernandez continued, in an interview with L`Equipe, by talking about the situation the club currently find themselves in.

"I have ended my observation period," he stated. "About the team`s state of mind, I have nothing to say. On the other hand, about the game level, it is obvious that the PSG of the end of the year is not comparable with the one from the start of the season.

"The reason is simple; we are too slow. We are not as fast as the others on the pitch. Our priority is to improve our efforts. The problem, though, is not just physical but mental."

Despite languishing in mid-table, Fernandez believes PSG can salvage something form the season, adding: "It's still possible to finish in the top three. I'm still optimistic, even in the Champions League, because if we finish the season without anything it will be a great setback."

He spoke about PSG`s youth policy, commenting: "Anelka, Ducrocq, Belmadi, Domi, Leroy were all educated with the club and on that point we are still bad.

"The wealth of talent in Paris is still not being exploited correctly."

Fernandez, meanwhile, heaped praise on Nicolas Anelka, saying: "By leaving France so young, he got a lot of experience. His qualities are exceptional, but he is also very strong in his mind.

"I love the player, the man, the team-mate. His behaviour in the group is excellent."
