MULRYNE FACING FURTHER INJURY MISERY

NORWICH CITY midfielder Philip Mulryne could be facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines, after being stretchered off in the 2-0 defeat to Fulham at the weekend with damaged knee ligaments.

Canaries boss Nigel Worthington has said that, while the injury does not seem to be as bad as it could have been, the young Northern Ireland international may yet face another extended spell out of action for the club.

The 23-year-old suffered a double compound fracture to his right leg in August 1999, and was out of action for eight months, but this latest injury is not expected to keep him on the sidelines for that long.

The former Manchester United midfielder has injured the ligaments in his left knee, and is to undergo tests on Monday to discover if he has torn the medial ligaments, which would be the worst-case scenario for him.

"Thankfully it's not his bad leg but it looks like knee ligaments," said Worthington.

"At this moment in time it doesn't look too clever but when it settles down we will make a far clearer decision as to how long the recovery will be."

Meanwhile, Canaries captain Matt Jackson also suffered a double injury setback in the Fulham game, damaging his knee ligaments early on in the game and then pulling a calf muscle in the second half.

"Matt hurt his knee very early in the game and carried on for the rest of the half," explained Worthington. "Because he was trying to protect the knee he's finished up also hurting his calf.

"Again, we'll assess the situation on Monday and see how long it's going to be. I don't think Jacko will be as bad as Phil's could be, but knee ligaments can take their time in healing."
