FERGIE EXPLAINS AMBASSADORIAL ROLE

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has been explaining the ambassadorial role that he looks set to undertake after his retirement from management next year.

The Manchester United boss, who is continuing to monitor PSV Eindhoven striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, has shed more light on the sort of responsibilities that will fall his way once leading the side to further glories is no longer part of his job requirement.

"The club are engaged in a programme of development which will see us operating academies in places like South Africa, China and other parts of the Far East," said the 59-year-old Scot.

"I will visit these places and make a contribution, but it will probably only take up about 30 days a year.

"That suits me because it will leave me free to do the other things. I`m going to love going to United`s games just to watch and enjoy.

"There are other things. I`d like to go the Melbourne Cup, the Kentucky Derby, see more of America, probably the southern states.

"But the club won`t be talking to me about that until after the summer. I think they`ll be assessing possible candidates for the manager`s job and then we`ll finalise things," he told The Scotsman.

"I`m very happy at the way things are shaping up. I think it will be perfect for me."

As for van Nistelrooy, United are still pondering resurrecting their record move for the Dutch striker.

"He`s doing remedial work right now and he is making such improvement that PSV wanted to take him on their midwinter tour this month," he added.

"But he hasn`t done any ball work yet and, until he does, I can`t properly assess him.

"But I am kept informed of his progress and I`m told they expect him to be playing by March."
