BOLTON SINK SORRY OWLS

BOLTON WANDERERS kept up the pressure on league leaders Fulham with a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsbrough.

Two first half goals were enough to seal the win with Jamaican international Ricardo Gardner and Michael Ricketts scoring the visitors. Former Leicester City Ian Marshall bagged a third for Wanderers with a goal two minutes from time after coming off the bench.

The result leaves The Owls at the wrong end of the table, and they will have to tighten-up at the back having the worst defensive record in the division.

Elsewhere, cup kings Crystal Palace salvaged a point at home to Gillingham after trailing by two goals with only ten minutes remaining.

The Eagles had seemed set for defeat after goals from Paul Shaw and Mark Saunders put the visitors ahead, however Dougie Freedman and Mikael Forssell capped a great comeback for the Selhurst Park faithful.

Nigel Spackman endured a second defeat at the helm after seeing Barnsley crash to Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor.

The visitors finished the match with only 10-men after the sending off of Chris Morgan shortly into the second-half. The home side took the lead after 23 minutes through Lenny Johnrose and doubled their lead through former Tyke Andy Payton.

New signing Steve Heyward did manage to pull a goal back for Barnsley, however it proved to be no more than a consolation.

Zema Abbey scored his first goal for The Canaries at Norwich beat Queens Park Rangers 1-0 at Carrow Road, whilst Nigel Quashie won the match for Portsmouth as they overcame Wimbledon 2-1 at Fratton Park.

Meanwhile West Brom continued their impressive season with a last gasp 2-1 win over Sheffield United at the Hawthorns.

Ruel Fox had fired The Baggies ahead with a right-footed drive, however Canadian international debutante Paul Peschisolido equalised to stun the home crowd.

Just when it The Blades looked set to claim a point Albion hero Lee Hughes fired home from close range to score his 17th of the season and clinch all three points.

Grimsby snatched a late point thanks to last gasp equaliser from Kevin Donovon. Stockport had looked set for another home win after Jarkko Wiss scored for the fourth successive match in a row at Edgeley Park.

The following matches were called off due to adverse weather conditions Crewe v Nottingham Forest, Preston v Wolverhampton and Tranmere v Huddersfield.
