SAND SIGNS NEW DEAL

SCHALKE striker Ebbe Sand has signed a new, improved contract with the Bundesliga club, which will see the Dane stay in Germany until 2005.

The 28-year-old's future has been in doubt for some time after the club stalled on improving his current deal, which runs out in 2003.

However, talks were opened this week, and he signed the new contract on Friday, with manager Rudi Assauer happy to have secured his future.

"Ebbe is one of the most important players at Schalke," he said. "He is not only one of our goal providers and one that the fans like a lot, he is also a perfect sportsman.

"One does not find strikers such as Ebbe, who is among the best in Europe, and we are pleased to have some peace on his situation."
