VENUS SIGNS NEW DEAL AT IPSWICH

VETERAN Ipswich Town defender Mark Venus has agreed to sign a new deal and see out the rest of his career at Portman Road.

The 33-year-old former Wolves ace has been instrumental in helping George Burley's side into the top six of The Premiership table, following their promotion last season and recently made his 100th appearance for the club.

"Mark has been outstanding for us this season and has played a big part in our success to date," commented Burley.

"I am very pleased he has signed a deal until 2002."

Venus has signed an 18 month contract and was delighted to commit the rest of his career to the East Anglian club.

"I'm really enjoying my football and at my age that is the most important thing," Venus said.

"I had no hesitation in agreeing a new deal, I never wanted to leave and I`m happy everything is sorted out.

"You never know what will happen in football but I will be happy to see my playing career out at Ipswich. I will give Ipswich the best of whatever is left in me."

Venus joined the club in a swap deal that saw Steve Sedgley move to Molineux in July 1997 and has scored 17 goals since his switch from the Midlands.
