GAYLE GAMBLE PAID OFF

WIMBLEDON striker Marcus Gayle has admitted that he intentionally disobeyed orders from manager Terry Burton during the FA Cup replay against Notts County on Saturday, but that the gamble paid off as Trond Andersen scored the winning goal.

With two minutes left of extra-time in the rearranged replay, Gayle was told to hold the ball in the corner to play for penalties.

However, the 30-year-old crossed the ball into the County penalty area, and Norwegian Andersen thundered a header past Gavin Ward to set up a fourth round tie with Middlesbrough.

"The manager was telling me not to cross the ball when I got possession on the left but I must admit that I gave him a blank," admitted Gayle. "Once you cross the white line you have to accept responsibility for what you see.

"I just felt that, if I could hit the edge of the box with a decent cross, someone would come on to it.

"Trond Andersen did just that and his header was far too powerful for the goalkeeper to save."
