SENSI: CASSANO HAS SIGNED FOR ROMA

ANTONIO CASSANO has shocked Serie A by agreeing a five-year-deal with Roma - and not, as expected, Juventus.

Cassano, the current wonderkid of Italian football, will move to Roma from current club Bari, as long as the Serie A minnows agree with the deal that has been offered.

Paolo Poggi's deadline day switch to Bari appears to have played a major part in sweetening the deal for the Biancorossi, with Juventus reportedly failing to make a firm bid.

The announcement was made by Roma president Franco Sensi, who stated: "Cassano is ours and has agreed a five-year-deal," adding that the arrangement should be concluded imminently, to allow the player to join his new team in the summer.

The move, on face value, looks set to cause a major upheaval at Roma, with Cassano preferring a role behind the two forwards - a role currently filled by Italian international and fan-favourite Francesco Totti.

Indeed Roma have already got a top level reserve for Totti as well, with Hidetoshi Nakata looking increasingly likely to move from away from Rome if the Japanese star wants first team football.

Cassano can play an orthodox forward role, but again Roma have a wealth of talent in this area, with veteran Gabriel Batistuta accompanied by Italian internationals Vincenzo Montella and Marco Delvecchio, creating massive competition for striking places.

The youngster, who turns 19 in August, was also watched by a wealth of Europe's top clubs, including English giants Manchester United, but made it clear that a move within Italy was favoured and that his dream was to play alongside idol Totti.
