MACCA - I AM A BETTER PLAYER NOW

STEVE McMANAMAN feels he has become a better player since moving to Real Madrid, and he has ridden the storm to emerge as one of the European Champions` key figures again this term.

The England international was surplus to requirements in the summer after new president Florentino Perez bankrolled the mega-money raid on Barcelona for Luis Figo.

The Portuguese superstar prefers to operate on the right flank, McManaman`s usual position, and, considering his high salary and the fact that he had been bought for nothing under the Bosman Ruling, it was decided that the former Liverpool ace must move on.

However, `Macca` stood firm, rejected a proposed move to Middlesbrough, and insisted he would fight to get back in favour under Vicente del Bosque.

And, with Real blazing a trail at the top of La Liga, and favourites to retain the Champions League, things could not be any better for the 28-year-old.

"It is special, exciting and the people are brilliant," enthused the midfielder to AS.

"I am a much better football player now.  No, seriously, I am far better.  More mature.

"I have changed English football for the Spanish and I have learned many things here.

"I have won the Champions League and I know the pressure that is placed on Europe."

McManaman is one Englishman abroad who has done much to further the image and reputation of British footballers, and Real Oviedo will be hoping that his former team-mate at Anfield, Stan Collymore, settles in with just as much relish, charm and commitment.
