IF BODE GOES, SO MIGHT MALZ

WERDEN BREMEN are mulling over a move for Arsenal's Stefan Malz, if they lose their highly-experienced midfielder Marco Bode at the end of the season.

Malz, who used to play for 1860 Munich in the Bundesliga, is seen as the ideal replacement for Bode and, being stuck in The Gunners' reserves, the midfielder is likely to be interested in a return to Germany.

Bremen manager Klaus Allofs said: "He (Malz) surely could take over Bode's role although we know he is not exactly the same kind of player."

Bode has stated his desire to try a different path at the late stage in his career, with The Premiership a possible stage for the 31-year-old.

The German star has stated his love of English football on numerous occasions and although Werder are trying their best to keep him, having spent 13 years at the club he wants a new challenge.

Bode's desire to finish his career with a title-chasing side also counts against Werder, as they face a battle against relegation and have been dumped out of the German and Uefa Cups.

National coach Rudi Voller has advised Bode to stay with Werder, saying: "It would be convenient for Bode to stay in Bremen until the 2002 World Cup."

If Werder fail to land Malz then they are also tracking Freiburg midfielder Zoubayer Baya, as the Tunisian international will be available on a free next summer.
