SILVESTRE GETS FRENCH CALL

MANCHESTER UNITED defender Mikael Silvestre has been called up to the French national squad for their clash with Germany after Monaco's Philippe Christanval withdrew because of injury.

Silvestre, who has been in impressive form for the champions after a disappointing start to the season, has never been in the national team before despite being a member of the French junior side that were crowned European champions in 1996.

He will only make his debut, though, if Christianval fails to recover from a leg injury sustained in Monaco's French Cup clash with Second Division Chateauroux.

"There is a bad bruise on the tibia and it's really painful," Christanval said.

"I'll go to the Clairefontaine training camp on Monday and I'll see what the doctor says. But I'm pretty sure I'll have to pull out."

Silvestre has come under fire from United supporters this season with a number of disappointing displays.

But he has established himself as a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's all-conquering side and enjoyed another good game in their 6-1 drubbing of Arsenal on Sunday.
