SPURS TARGET DUTCH STRIKER

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR are believed to be mulling over the prospect of making a move for highly-rated FC Twente striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, while the player has revealed an interest in moving to England.

Spurs boss George Graham travelled to Holland to watch the sought after hit-man in action on Sunday for Twente against Sparta Rotterdam, and saw the striker score his 13th goal of the campaign in the 5-1 defeat.

Graham is keen to add to his attacking options at White Hart Lane with his side struggling to score goals this season, as Sergei Rebrov has failed to settle yet in the English game and Chris Armstrong and Steffen Iversen have both struggled for fitness this term.

There are also doubts over the long-term future of Les Ferdinand at the club, as he has failed to sign a new deal, and Graham has targeted Vennegoor of  Hesselink as the man who could score the goals to fire his side to success.

The North London club have been severely hampered by their lack of cover up front this season, and have had to bring in Andy Booth from Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

Graham is planning to strengthen his squad next season with the front line his main concern and he hopes that new owners ENIC will offer him the funds necessary to compete for the best players available, as he tries to turn the club into a major force in the league.

Spurs will face a battle to land the £5 million-rated forward, with Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven all keen to keep him in Holland and a number of other clubs across Europe tracking his progress including Glasgow Rangers and Schalke 04.

The 22-year-old admitted that he is flattered by Tottenham's reported interest in him, although no official bid has been made for his services.

"Tottenham are a beautiful club and the Premier League has always interested me," said Vennegoor of Hesselink. "But at this moment I really don't know yet where I will be playing next season."

Twente will be keen to hang on to their most prized-asset but it is likely that the player himself will want to move on to a higher profile club in a bid to enhance his international opportunities.
