U's INJURY PRESENTS A "SERIOUS SITUATION"

CAMBRIDGE UNITED'S hopes of staving off relegation have been delivered a massive blow with the news that on-loan striker Richie Humphreys could be ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The 23-year-old Sheffield Wednesday forward sustained a broken bone in his foot after just six minutes of Cambridge`s defeat at Luton on Tuesday evening.

Humphreys was due to have X-rays on the injury on Wednesday, but John Beck revealed that club physio Ken Steggles had already confirmed that the former England U-21 player had suffered a broken bone.

Beck also admitted that he may be forced to dip into the transfer market in order to secure a replacement for the Yorkshireman and, with £200,000 reported to be at his disposal, it seems likely that he will be looking to make a signing before transfer deadline day.

"I was searching for a striker before this blow, and I've talked to a couple, but not with much success at the moment. Now it's a huge priority," said Beck.

"It's a very serious situation," he added.
