IRISH LOOK TO END SECTARIAN ABUSE

NORTHERN IRELAND'S Football Association have pledged to give lifetime bans to fans who aim sectarian abuse at players - in the wake of the treatment meted out to Neil Lennon last month.

The Celtic player was booed by a small section of the Windsor Park crowd during the 4-0 defeat to Norway, his first international since moving to Parkhead, and the IFA hope to prevent such an incident happening again.

"If the IFA feels the offence is so serious we don't want them back at Windsor Park for international matches it will be a lifelong ban, it's as simple as that," IFA president Jim Boyce said.

After a week of thinking over the situation, and discussing the matter with Bhoys manager, and former Northern Ireland international, Martin O'Neill, Lennon decided to carry on playing for the Irish.

It is thought that Lennon will make a statement ahead of the game against the Czech Republic on March 24th, along with manager Sammy McIlroy who welcomed the moves to rid Windsor Park of it's nastier elements.

"If they are chanting against the Northern Ireland team of players, certainly we don't want them," McIlroy said.
