SHEARER TO SEE KNEE SPECIALIST
The former England star will meet top knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman, who treated Liverpool duo Patrik Berger and Jamie Redknapp, in a bid to discover whether he needs further surgery on the problem.
Shearer, who had only just recently returned from nine weeks on the sidelines with the knee problem, suffered a recurrence of the problem in training two weeks ago just two games into his comeback and he could miss the rest of the season if he has to undergo further surgery.
The club are worried that their star man could be missing for another lengthy period and they have sent him to America to find out how bad the injury is.
Newcastle may be willing to let Shearer miss the rest of the campaign so that he can get a complete rest and get himself fully fit for the start of next season.
"Alan has undergone initial tests and is due to meet again with Dr Steadman later today," said a club spokesman.
"It is not known at this stage whether another operation will be required or whether rest will be advised."
