FUTRE TRAVELS TO COURT SIMEONE

ATLETICO MADRID'S sporting director Paulo Futre has travelled to Argentina to watch the country's World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, fuelling rumours he was making an attempt to lure Diego Simeone to Spain.

Simeone has already been linked with a move to La Liga but seemed to have pledged his future future to Lazio having signed a contract until 2004.

It would appear that Futre has flown to South America in a final attempt to persuade the player to move to Atletico, something that would depend upon Jesus Gil y Gil's side gaining promotion.

Simeone is due to play his 100th game for the Argentinians but it is Futre's attempts to get the player back which is smitten the media, as the midfielder was an important player in Atletico's 1996 league and cup double.

Before the Venezuelan game, Simeone will receive an award from the Argentinian Football Federation and Futre is there to represent Atletico in proceedings.

Fellow Argentinian Kily Gonzalez is also likely to be watched on Wednesday evening, with Juventus checking out the left-sided star.

Meanwhile Juan Veron has hinted at a possible switch to Barcelona, with the passport scandal that has dogged him in Italy a possible catalyst to his move.

Veron said: "I don't know if I'm going to continue with Lazio as the passports affair has had an influence. It's because of that that I would like to have a sporting experience outside of Serie A, and Barcelona would be a good alternative."

Veron also advised Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa to give the youngsters a chance. He said: "It would be good if Bielsa thinks of young players playing in Argentina for the games outside the World Cup qualifiers, maybe something like against Mexico.

"We want to play always, but it would be okay if Milito or (Estaban) Cambiasso play once we've achieved qualification."
