IRANIAN IDOL CONFIRMS GERS INTEREST

HERTHA BERLIN hit-man Ali Daei has confirmed that Rangers are interested in bringing him to Ibrox at the end of the season.

Following our earlier report detailing Dick Advocaat's determination to strengthen his attacking resources by making a move for the former Bayern Munich marksman, Daei has revealed that he is fully aware of the option of a transfer to Scotland.

"I have known about the interest from Glasgow for about a month," confirmed the Iranian international legend.

At 32, this could be the opportunity to play in Britain that the experienced striker has always craved. After failing to shine in Berlin, since leaving Bayern, the opportunity to resurrect his career is a tempting one, even though his contract does not expire until 2002.

There is even the prospect that any deal with Rangers would be on a temporary basis, allowing the player to prove his worth in the Scottish Premier League.

The Gers have already targeted Claudio Caniggia, with Dundee owner Peter Marr admitting that a deal may have been done between the Argentinian's agent and the Ibrox outfit, although the Taysiders would demand at least £1 million for their star striker.

"The only way Claudio will be leaving is if he feels that moving to a club that was involved in the Champions League would improve his chances of getting back in the Argentina side," commented Marr.

Tore Andre Flo is showing signs of settling in at the club, following his record move from Chelsea, and Gers chairman David Murray has insisted that the Norwegian will be a key member of the squad next season.

However, the 1999 Asian Player of the Year is waiting in the wings for Advocaat, and it looks certain that the Dutch coach will enhance the options within his squad by making some major plunges in the transfer market.

Stung by Celtic's remarkable success this term, with The Bhoys on the brink of a wonderful Treble triumph, Rangers will be aiming to ensure that they are back competing for silverware in 2001/2002.
