SOCRATES SLAMS 'SUPICIOUS' CALL-UPS

FORMER Brazilian captain Socrates has stated his belief that the state of football in the country has slumped, with corruption the main trigger.

As an example, Socrates used the recent call-ups of Washington and Ewerthon of Ponte Preta and Corinthians respectively to the Brazilian squad for the 1-1 draw with Peru in the World Cup qualifiers.

Despite a plethora of European stars deeming themselves unavailable for the match - Barcelona's Rivaldo being top of the list, it would seem the selection of those two players is being questioned in Brazil.

Socrates said: "Corruption has taken over the national football.  Everything is corrupted.

"Washington is going to Milan.  Ewerthon has almost agreed a deal with a Spanish club.  That's not a coincidence, everybody knows that the European clubs require the players to have national team experience before going through with his transfer."

Socrates, who starred in the Brazilian squad of the 1982 and 86 World Cups called the inclusion of the duo 'suspicious'.

He continued: "A player from Barcelona and Real Madrid, comes to play with a lot of bad players and then supports the team with suspicious objectives.

"That's why they lost the enthusiasm."

Speaking about the performance in the qualifiers so far by Brazil, Socrates said: "We still have the chance to go to the World Cup but only fighting for the last two places or even facing the Oceanic winner.

"Now in South America, we are only better than Venezuela.  I'm not over-reacting.  The only game that Brazil won easily was against Venezuela.

"Outside Brazil, we only defeated Peru, having troubles.  Here we've got luck against Uruguay, Colombia and even Argentina."

Socrates also criticised the Brazilian coaches, saying that they are not prepared for the job.

"In Brazilian football, there are no coaches that understand tactics, technical, nutrition or physiology.  The organisation in Brazilian football is all wrong."

Socrates refused to criticise Emerson Leao, the Brazilian coach, but claimed that: "There are players that can't be out of the team.  For example Deportivo La Coruna's Djalminha."

The former captain claimed he was the 'anti-candidate' for the Brazilian Football Confederation presidency, he said if elected, he would: "Democratise the structure of the institution to avoid a major crisis to this sport.

"If we don't do anything, in a few months, football will be once more excluded from the country."

Meanwhile, Leao has revealed he will announce the Brazilian squad for the Confederations Cup, due to be played in Japan and Korea between May 30 and June 10.

Leao faces many problems with a large amount of Brazilian sides playing in the finals of their regional championships, whilst the European stars will only be available from May 26.
