VENTOLA EYES INTER RETURN

ATALANTA'S hopes of securing the services of Nicola Ventola on a permanent basis appear to be receding after the player revealed his disappointment at being omitted for last Sunday's draw with Reggina.

Ventola is currently at the tiny provincial club on a one-year loan deal from Inter but Atalanta were keen to make the move permanent, a feeling shared by Ventola before he was surprisingly left out of the side.

The 22-year-old cost Inter over £9 million when he moved from Bari to the Giuseppe Meazza three years ago, but he was unable to command a regular place and his form suffered. Last season, Ventola was loaned to Bologna but he failed to score from 14 starts and last summer Inter passed him onto the then newly-promoted Atalanta.

Despite missing the start of the season through injury, Ventola has been a central figure in Atalanta's success - firing in ten goals and establishing himself as a firm fans` favourite.

However, the return to fitness of fellow striker Fausto Rossini appears to have shifted the club's coach Giovanni Vavasori's balance of favour away from Ventola and on Sunday he was left out of the side.

"At the end of last week I was convinced my future lay with Atalanta but now I think it is highly unlikely that I will remain," said Ventola.

"On Sunday against Reggina Atalanta have played four attackers meaning I am considered the fifth choice.

"I can return to Inter and be fourth choice," added Ventola.
