BARCA FEAR CAMPBELL SNUB
The Catalan giants are very keen to lure the England international to Camp Nou and reportedly ready to offer him a lucrative five-year worth £100,000-a-week deal to quit Spurs on a Bosman free transfer as his contract expires next month.
Campbell had indicated earlier this week that he did not want to move abroad and Barca are pessimistic of their chances of signing him.
Barca coach Carles Rexach admitted that talks had been held with the Spurs captain, and they were waiting to hear a response from Campbell over their offer.
"A lot depends on whether Campbell wants to leave Tottenham, a club he has played for all his life," said Rexach.
"He says he wants time to think about it but I believe that if he can reach an agreement with Tottenham, he will stay there.
"He is the kind of defender we like. He is young and aggressive and we have lacked that in defence this season, especially with injury problems affecting Aberlardo and Frank de Boer.
"But my personal opinion is that Campbell likes Tottenham so much that he will accept a good offer to stay with them.
Barca have also targeted Monaco's young defender Philippe Christanval should they miss out on Campbell.
The 22-year-old defender is highly-rated in France and has attracted the interest of a number of clubs across Europe and Rexach admitted he may prove to be a better alternative to Campbell.
"Although he is not as aggressive as Campbell he is maybe a bit more constructive," said Rexach.
Rexach, who recently succeeded Llorenc Serra Ferrer as Barcelona coach on a caretaker basis, also indicated that their former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit would be allowed to leave the Nou Camp if he can agree terms with a new club, which will boost Chelsea's hopes of landing him.
Meanwhile the Spaniards have been linked with a move for Leeds United midfield ace Olivier Dacourt.
Barca are reportedly preparing a £12 million bid for the Frenchman as they try to strengthen the squad after a disappointing season this term.
The Catalan outfit are ready to offer Dacourt a deal worth £60,000 a week, more than double his current salary, in a bid to lure him away from Elland Road.
The player's agent Bruno Satin revealed that there has been a lot of interest in the former Everton ace, who has impressed for Leeds this season in their run to the Champions League semi-finals.
"There has been a lot of interest in Olivier from all over Europe but the strongest is from Spain," said Satin.
Leeds will fight off any attempt to try and take Dacourt away from Yorkshire as he proved to be an excellent acquisition since his £7.2 million move from Lens last summer and established himself as a firm fans favourite.
