OWEN: RHYTHM ENDED EARLY SEASON BLUES

MICHAEL OWEN has told of his confidence that he would overcome early-season injury and bad form to get back to his best - despite speculation that he would never be the same player.

The diminutive striker has been in scintillating form of late, helping Liverpool to an unprecedented European and domestic cup treble, but his early season problems had seen reports that he would not ever live up to his early promise.

However, the England international, who exploded into the public's consciousness with a wonder goal against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup, insists that he had the full support of the people that mattered.

"Other people didn't believe in what I was doing, even though I myself had no doubts.

"I'm not talking about the people at my club or my family, but other people, supporters, media, whatever.

"I believed all along that I'd be back to my best and that was the main thing.

"I was just waiting for something to click me into gear.

"There's no magic in it. It is just a case of playing games and getting a rhythm again. Everyone has dips in form.

"I've had them before and I'm sure I'll have them again. But when your 20-21 it just makes you realise no to get too down or too up.

"You score a goal in the FA Cup Final and it is easy to get carried away - you're either the best or the worst in the world according to a lot of people.

"You know yourself you're somewhere in the middle. The most important thing is not to get carried away by what other people say, whether it's good or bad."
