SPURS CALL PRESS CONFERENCE

TOTTENHAM have called a press conference for Saturday afternoon to announce a new signing, reckoned to be Manchester United hit-man Teddy Sheringham.

Talks are understood to have taken place between the England striker and his former club this week, and a Bosman free transfer should see the 35-year-old return to White Hart Lane.

Sheringham had expressed a desire to remain at Old Trafford, but the offer of a one-year deal and arrival of Ruud van Nistelrooy, have led to him favouring a two-year contract with Spurs.

The move will also enable the former Millwall and Nottingham Forest star to closely monitor the footballing progress of his young son, Charlie, in the capital.

After initially enduring taunts from rival supporters for his failure to pick up a trophy in his first season at United, the 2001 double Player of the Year had the last laugh in dramatic fashion, a year later in 1999.

'Sheri' scored in the FA Cup win over Newcastle and then entered the fray in Camp Nou to score once, then set up Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winner against Bayern Munich. The last-gasp turnaround ensured he picked up three winners' medals, and he has followed it up with two more title triumphs.

Spurs have been linked with a whole host of players since Glenn Hoddle took over at the club, with Goran Bunjevcevic already on his way in on a five-year contract.

Sheringham will be joined in the Spurs attack by Les Ferdinand, 34, and the duo could form the oldest strike partnership in the top flight.
