PERUGIA TO TAKE WILKIE ON TRIAL

DUNDEE defender Lee Wilkie has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Serie A side Perugia.

The Scottish Under-21 international is set to go to Perugia on trial this week after impressing the Italians with his performances for the Dark Blues this season.

The 21-year-old ace, was made aware of Pergia's interest by club co-ordinator Dario Magri after watching him in action against Hearts on the final day of the Scottish season.

Wilkie is hopeful of winning himself a dream move to Serie A, but he admitted if he does not get the move he will happy to return to Dens Park.

"At the moment I don't know much more that Perugia saw me against Hearts and want me in Italy for three days," said Wilkie. "I think the plan is for me to go there before the end of their season and that would suit me.

"I don't know much about them, but Serie a is a very good league and the chance to play in it would be great.

Wilkie has also attracted the interest of English First Divisio outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have had him on trial and are keen to have another look at him before deciding whether or not to make a permanent move for him.

Wherever Wilkie ends up he is determined to be playing regular first-team football next season and he has not ruled that out being at Dundee, despite falling out-of-favour with Dens Park boss Ivano Bonetti.

"A couple of months ago I would have said my future lay elsewhere, but all that turned round in the last few week or so of the season," said Wilkie. "I was back training with the first team and got a start against Hearts.

"If I am challenging for my place with Dundee when next season starts, I'll be happy.

"However, I know I can't afford to be out of the first-team picture any more. I've still got a year left at Under-21 level and I would like to get my Scotland place back.

"Most of the boys in the team are playing top-team football, and Alex Smith (Under-21 manager) has said they are players he is going to pick, so I know I have to be getting a regular game to be in the squad.

Perugia have also been linked with s shock swoop for Bolton Wanders striker Dean Holdsworth.

Holdsworth is out-of-contract in the summer and as yet has not been offered a new deal despite helping them win promotion to The Premiership.

Bolton are keen to hang onto him but Perugia could tempt Holdsworth with the chance of playing at the highest level at such a late stage in his career.

His former club Wimbledon are also understood to be keen on bringing Holdsworth back to Selhurst Park and they will battle Perugia for his signature should he decide to leave The Reebok Stadium.
