HARTSON IN PASSPORT ROW

JOHN HARTSON could be ruled out of Wales' crucial World Cup qualifier against the Ukraine on Wednesday after a row with the government over the state of his passport.

The Coventry City striker has been refused a visa by the Ukrainian embassy because his passport was too scruffy, and now the Welsh FA has said that they will get Fifa involved if the matter is not resolved soon.

"The Ukrainian Embassy are refusing to give John a visa because they're saying his passport is in such a bad condition and it only arrived on Wednesday," said the Welsh FA.

"We've been trying to get visas sorted out for various players but they're just being awkward. John's visa is something we're hoping to get resolved in the next 24 hours.

"But if we need to get Fifa involved, we will."

Wales already have to take on Poland on Saturday without Hartson's Coventry team-mate Craig Bellamy and Welsh boss Mark Hughes could now face a striker crisis against the Ukraine if the powerful ex-Wimbledon star is also ruled out.
