LAZIO FANS PLEAD WITH THURAM

LAZIO'S supporters have met with Lilian Thuram and pleaded with the Parma defender to come to Rome, despite his fears over their racist attitude, ensuring last season's Scudetto winners are back in the race to sign him.

Four members of the 'Irriducibili' reassured the Frenchman that their motives are not racist, but the 29-year-old is still not convinced about joining another Serie A side, with Juventus also in the frame for his signature.

Parma would obviously rather sell him to a foreign club, bringing Manchester United and Real Madrid into the frame, and he could always decide to remain with his current club.

However, rumours are rife that $25 million plus Paolo Negro will take Thuram to the capital, with the World Cup winner receiving an annual salary of $4 million over the next five years.

"I listened with great interest to what the 'Irriducibili' had to say," he admitted. "They invited me to accept Lazio's offer and move to Rome.

"It was a very nice and interesting meeting where they declared that they are not racists.

"But, before I can accept a move to Lazio, I have to think twice and have some more guarantees."

The centre half or right back is one of the most coveted players in Europe at the moment, and he remains guarded about his future.

"A coloured player must think twice before going to Lazio," he continued.

"This meeting has made me understand many things and it has been a positive gesture for Lazio and for football, because the biancoceleste club is always spoken about negatively.

"Nothing is still decided. What is for sure is that I will play in a team who use four defenders."

Meanwhile, Dino Zoff admitted: "I don't know if Thuram will join us, but he is a great player and would be a very important addition to any team."
