SPURS IN SERGIO LINK

TOTTENHAM are believed to have joined the hunt for Espanyol's Sergio Gonzalez, despite the Spanish club's president, Daniel Sanchez Llibre stating the player is not available for transfer.

Spurs will have to battle the likes of Deportivo La Coruna and Barcelona for the star and the situation is likely to remain hazy for some time.

Depor were rumoured to be interested but only if they sell their volatile Brazilian Djalminha but all clubs will have to pay the buy-out clause of 4,000 million pesetas (£15.2 million).

Speaking about Barca's interest, Llibre said: "Nobody from Barcelona has asked about Sergio's situation.

"If the information from the Italian website is true, Barca already know they have to pay the clause of 4,000 million pesetas to buy our player."

Tottenham's interest seems at the moment to have been confined to an initial call to check his status, to which Espanyol gave the Premiership side a glimmer of hope of a deal, allowing the money to be paid in installments over a year.

This shows the nature of the Barcelona-based club's financial state, being largely in debt and facing a situation in which they have to sell their players.
