CORT FITNESS BOOST FOR MAGPIES

NEWCASTLE UNITED appear to have been handed a fitness boost, with the news that Carl Cort has not suffered any long-term damage to his ankle.

The former Wimbledon striker sustained an injury during the 2-1 friendly win at Exeter and the club were worried that there could have been serious ligament damage.

The player`s injured ankle was put in plaster amid fears that he could be sidelined until into the new season, but those worries appear to have been allayed.

A club spokesman said: "The weight-bearing plaster he has had on for ten days has been removed and after further examinations there is no serious injury."

Magpies boss Bobby Robson will be relieved that one of his star players should be fit, but he still has doubts over the availability of captain Alan Shearer and midfielder Kieron Dyer.
