NICO TO OPEN TOWN TALKS

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN are to open contract talks with Belgian goalkeeper Nico Vaesen.

The 30-year-old only has12 months remaining on his current deal and manager Lou Macari is desperate to fend off interest from a number of clubs and persuade the shot-stopper to stay at The McAlpine Stadium.

"We are intending to sit down with Nico in the next 24 hours or so to talk things through," said Macari.

"The intention is to thrash out a new contract with him because we want to keep our better players to give ourselves the best possible opportuinity of getting back in the First Division.

"To achieve promotion is not going to be easy in any case, and it certainly won't be made any easier if we've not got our better players in the squad next season.

"In fact, if we haven't got our better players still in the squad, it's going to be extremely difficult to get back up into Division One.

"Nico's record with the club speaks for itself and he has done consistently well over a long period of time."

Vaesen, who joined Huddersfield in July 1998 for a bargain £80,000 from Eendracht Aalst, has only missed four games since joining The Terriers.
