OVIEDO RELEGATED AT MALLORCA

RIVALDO will command the headlines, but there was other important action in Spain, and Real Oviedo lost their battle against relegation after falling to a 4-2 defeat at Real Mallorca.

The result, along with Osasuna`s 1-0 win at Real Sociedad, saw Oviedo sink to 18th place and saw them relegated along with Numancia and Racing Santander.

Oviedo could have stayed up with a point, but their hopes were dashed when Mallorca raced into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes by Vincent Engonga, a penalty, and Samuel Eto`o.

They battled back to 2-1 thanks to Oli`s goal but Ariel Ibagaza restored Mallorca`s cushion.

Ivan Ania scored a fabulous free-kick to again give Oviedo hope, but they were denied when Alvaro Novo struck late on.

Osasuna occupied the third relegation spot at the start of play, two points behind Oviedo, but a goal from Ivan Rosado was enough to give them a 1-0 win against Real Sociedad.

Real Madrid ended their title winning season with a 2-1 win over Valladolid, Raul (pictured) scoring both the goals to claim the top-scorer award ahead of Rivaldo.

Last year`s Liga winners Deportivo La Coruna signed off with a 4-0 home romp over Malaga. Djalminha grabbed a brace, with Roy Makaay and Victor also finding their way onto the scoresheet

The final game on Sunday saw Zaragoza and Celta Vigo play out a 1-1 draw. Catanha put the visitors in front on 51 minutes, but Paulo Jamelli earned a point for the Zaragoza shortly afterwards.
