REDS MAKE SHOCK WEAH MOVE
PLANETFOOTBALL.COM can exclusively confirm that Liverpool are in talks to bring former World Player of the Year George Weah back to The Premiership.
The 34-year-old striker, who left Manchester City in acrimonious circumstances last October to join Marseille, is available on a free transfer from the Stade Velodrome and, according to his agent Ian Anderson, is keen on a return to The Premiership.
The Liberian international is looking for a new club and Anderson admitted there has been interest from other clubs in the United Kingdom, with particular interest coming from Liverpool, as well as America, and former club Monaco.
Anderson revealed that Weah felt that they way he left Manchester City in October, after a fall-out with then Maine Road boss Joe Royle, was not how he wanted to be remembered in England and that he had "unfinished business in The Premiership."
"George has left Marseille and he is available on a free transfer," Anderson told planetfootball.com. "We are talking to clubs in the UK and one in particular which is Liverpool.
"George has had offers from America and from Monaco, but he is interested in Liverpool and would definitely like to come back to England.
"When he left Manchester City after what had gone on he felt that he had some unfinished business."
Weah's proposed arrival at Anfield would be a major shock, but Reds boss Gerard Houllier has shown that age is no barrier to signing a player he admires, having surprised everyone by taking Gary McAllister to Anfield last year from Coventry, and the player rewarded his faith in him by playing an instrumental role in their treble success.
Liverpool have plenty of strength in depth in the forward positions with England trio Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, and Emile Heskey, plus Finnish international Jari Litmanen contesting for the two spots in the team.
Houllier realises that his side will face another hectic fixture schedule next season and he is keen to have plenty of cover in all positions.
The Frenchman is well aware of what Weah can do and he feels that the veteran forward will add experience to the front line and provide quality cover to the side as they hope to have the extra demands of the Champions League to contend with.
Anderson admitted that Weah knows and accepts that he would not be guaranteed first-team football at Anfield, but that he was prepared to join Houllier's men anyway and fight for his place.
"Gerard Houllier feels that with all the games Liverpool will have to play next year, he will need to strengthen the squad and he would like to bring George to the club," said Anderson.
"George knows that he will not be first choice and he is willing to accept that.
"He appreciates that he won't be able to play in every game at his stage of his career," added Anderson.
Should Houllier persuade Weah to move to Anfield, he will become The Reds' first major signing of the summer, and it is one which is sure to stun the footballing world.
