SCHALKE HOME IN ON ROST

SCHALKE are closing in on Werder Bremen goalkeeper Frank Rost as they look to close the gap on Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The current number one at the Arena AufSchalke is veteran Oliver Reck, 36 who is likely to retire at the end of the approaching season and assume a coaching role with the Gelsenkirchen club.

German international Rost, 27 is believed to be the prime target for The Konigsblauen with general manager Rudi Assauer confirming: "Yes we want to sign him and he wants to join us. If we found an agreement with Bremen we would sign Rost in 2002.

"All that I can say is that we will do everything we can to reach an arrangement soon."

The green-and-whites shot-stopper is rated at £3.5 million and Schalke would probably face competition from Ruhr rivals Borussia Dortmund for his signature.

Reports in the German press claim that Assauer gave the Werder keeper an extensive tour around Schalke's new ground "The Arena AufSchalke" ahead of the impending Bundesliga season.
