PARMA MAKE LAST-DITCH VERON BID

PARMA are set to make a last gasp bid to sign Manchester United-bound midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron from Lazio, as they try to replace the plethora of major stars that have left the club.

Gialloblu fans have been shell-shocked to see star-defender Lilian Thuram and Italian international goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon leave for Juventus for a combined fee totalling some £45 million.

With striker Amoroso departing for Borussia Dortmund and Fabio Cannavaro also rumoured to be seeking a move to Roma, a major influx of top players will be essential to the club's season.

Veron is already deeply embroiled in talks with Manchester United, but Parma are reportedly keen to give a last ditch option to the Argentinian and may also move for Lazio team-mate and fellow countryman Claudio Lopez - who has not had the expected impact at the Roman club since his move from Valencia last summer.

Parma fans are growing increasingly restless with the state of affairs at their club, slamming lies that only one major star would leave the club in the summer.

The return of former favourite Veron would go some way to appeasing the Ennio Tardini tifosi, but it still seems likely that the influential South American will be playing in The Premiership next year.

It has also been suggested in the Italian tabloids that Internazionale could also be ready to launch a big-money bid for Veron, but the 26-year-old seems set for Old Trafford.

More negotiations have been held between chief executive Peter Kenyon and agent Gustavo Mascardi, and a stringent medical is being lined up in order to prove the Argentinian's fitness.

The deal should be completed by Monday, as previously reported, providing there is no late U-turn in the light of the interest from Serie A.
